Dole Plantation

The Dole Plantation is one of best kept secrets of the Island of Oahu.  You may not be thinking about visiting a pineapple plantation when you visit or move to Hawaii but if you ignore this little gem you’ll regret it.

The Dole Plantation’s Big Maze

The Dole Plantation sports the world’s largest maze as certified by Guinness.  It is a maze surrounded and made up of high hedge and pineapple plants.  You can seek out the 8 secret stations while walking through the maze and record them on a card while trying to find your way out of the maze.

The Pineapple Express

Take a 20-minute mini-train ride upon the Pineapple Express.  The tour is fully narrated and available in English, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin.  The tour gives a quick synopsis of James Dole and the pineapple industry in Hawaii.  These tours start every half an hour between 9:30 am and 5:00 pm.

The Garden Tour

The Dole Plantation’s gardens are truly remarkable and beautiful.  There are 8 mini gardens where you can see different types of pineapples and their plants.  You’ll learn more about the pineapple during this interactive (available in the same languages as the train narration) stroll then you ever thought possible.

The Store

Don’t take the Dole Plantation store and gift shop for granted.  Besides the typical souvenirs of pineapple and Dole branded merchandise, they also have other famous Hawaiian goods, like a large Kona coffee selection. And don’t leave without trying some Pineapple ice cream and getting some food from the Plantation Grille.  On my visit I tried something awesome called the Dole Whip!  Fresh pineapple, sweet pineapple juice, ice cream and whipped cream…oh my God!  It was refreshing.

The Grounds

The entire landscape and grounds of the Dole Plantation is a mix of modern accomodations with an old world feel.  I sat at a table eating my Dole Whip and hand fed wild chickens and zebra doves my wife’s cookie.
